The Cable Guy

Your worst fears come to life, the cable guy needs a friend and he chose you.  Jim Carrey plays Ernie “Chip” Douglas a cable guy that has a lisp and is dying to have a friend. Steven Kovacs, played by Mathew Broderick moves into a new apartment after his girlfriend Robin turns down his proposal. When Steve calls the cable company to install his cable his is “lucky” enough to get Chip to install his cable. Listening to his friend Rick, Steve asks Chip to give him some free movie channels. Chip does it and says that Steven is one of his “preferred customers” and says he will see him the next day. True to his word Chip shows up the next day and takes Steve to the satellite dish that is responsible for all the television he sees.  Feeling safe he divulges to Chip all of his problems that he is having with Robin. Seeing that Steven is hurting Chip gives him the idea of inviting her over to see Sleepless in Seattle. Things’ beginning to get more awkward though when Chip keeps running into everything that Steven does. Chip forces Steven to continue to hang out with him. He takes Steven to Medieval Times where he almost kills Steven, then takes him home to Steven’s and hosts a party. When Chip tells Steven that some of the women at the party were indeed prostitutes Steve in a fit of anger throws Chip out. Upset, Chip says that he will make things better. What will Chip do to make things better? How can he make things better when all he did was screw up?

“The Cable Guy” is a dark comedy from the 90’s that everyone can enjoy. Jim Carrey and Mathew Broderick are fantastic and the supporting cast is great as well. The plot is funny and keeps you entertained with Jim Carrey singing and acting like a complete moron. You will root for Mathew’s character to finally ditch Jim Carrey due to his creepy demeanor. Some parts of the movie are way too dark for something that Jim Carrey does, even though the darkest moments are still hilariously funny. All in all “The Cable Guy” is funny, a little creepy, and has amazing actors.

Good:
-Great Cast
-Great comedic lines
-Great plot

Bad:
-Way to dark in some scenes

Scully Rating: 8 out of 10
