Ah the tropics, a place full of wonder and beauty to behold for anyone who comes to visit. The crown controls one of these islands and needs a governor to run it and it for whatever reason you're the person for the job. Are you up to the task? If you are then get ready for your family to take over and bend this island to your will through money, power or force if necessary.
Tropico 5 is the latest in a line of city builder/strategy games that is set in the late 1800's and spans from there all the way to the modern day. To begin the game you will create your character who will play as the head of your dynasties family. Then you can choose to do what you would like from here by either doing missions for the crown or the rebels but always be sure to keep an eye on the time you're given for your mandate because if it rums out that means game over. The only way to fix this issue is to get over 50% approval overall and then either fight for independence from the crown or buy it, that is your choice.
This game is fun and addictive, every island that you can play on is different so no play through is the same as the last. In order to succeed in the game you must create jobs, homes and trading for your people. All the while you're also completing missions, exploring and fending off invaders. Everything is done for the benefit of your people in the game whether it's finding ore deposits or looking to make the crop that would earn your domain the most money. One weird thing that I did find in my playthroughs was the timeline itself, if you get to the missions you're doing quickly you can get to the Cold War before 1945. While this makes no sense it all it is always fun to change history a little.
Graphically the game is top notch as well, your surroundings are beautiful and the islands really come to life while you play. The soundtrack is maybe the best I have heard in a game like this before, its quick paced and fun to listen to as your plucking along across the seas or across your island nation. The whole thing will have you dancing and just make you feel happy and isn't that why we play games? The game does have a steep learning curve and will take awhile to master at first but if you spend time with it, it will be a game you will truly love.
Although the game may be hard at time and because it is a city builder with not much more to offer, it is still a game to look into. The graphics throughout the game a delightful and beautiful plus the soundtrack is top notch to listen to as you play along ruling over your island. The timeline can get a little screwy at time though depending on how well you govern things and how fast you progress yourself but all in all it is a game I am always coming back to play.
Good:
- Graphics are solid
- A pleasant soundtrack to listen to while you rule your island nation
- A fun city builder that is set apart from the rest
Bad:
- Hard to pick up right away
- The timeline of events can get messed up now and again
Scully Rating: 8.0 out of 10
