Hey guys, Zach here. Normally, we at Scully Nerd Reviews take the weekend off, but I'm making an exception for the very final chapter of one of my favorite manga series: Deadman Wonderland. It's been a hell of a ride, but all things must end in time. This was a great chapter, wrapping up what happened to the main characters after the events at Deadman Wonderland. All the loose ends are tied up, and there is some closure between Ganta and Shiro. I'm going to miss seeing new chapters of the series, but I'm happy with how it all turned out. If you've been following this series for a while, here is the conclusion you've been waiting for; if you haven't followed the series, then it's all officially released so you can read right on through if you want. In either case, I hope you enjoy this chapter, and I hope you enjoyed this great series.
This month's chapter shows the conclusion of the battle between Ganta and Shiro, and things turn out in pretty much the manner you were expecting. However, while the chapter itself was very brief, it does bring things to a decisive conclusion. The execution here was very solid, albeit predictable. I will admit to wanting to shed a man-tear during the dialogue, though. There was also a good callback to the beginning of the series, particularly the "Woodpecker" song Shiro was singing. We have one final chapter in the series, and I can't wait to see the epilogue, and how the final loose ends are tied up.
Time for the new issue of Deadman Wonderland, and boy, am I on the edge of my seat. Not only do we have the final confrontation with the Wretched Egg and Ganta, but it seems that no matter what Ganta wants, whether it be revenge or to help Shiro, he is forced to face the possibility that he will have to kill the Wretched Egg. This conflict has been in the making since episode one, and it looks like it's time to put the cards on the table and see how it turns out. Ganta started this series as a naive, weak-hearted boy who didn't know how to stand up on his own two feet. However, he now has not only the strength to stand, but to keep getting up when he falls. I'm anxious to see how this all turns out, and will he grant Shiro's final wish? Is there a way for the two of them to finally find peace, and find happiness? It all seems to be coming up to the climax, so we'll just have to keep reading and waiting for the next chapter. I'll let you know when the next chapter comes out, because I know I'll be waiting for it.
This chapter focuses more on the origin of the Wretched Egg, finally bringing things full circle and explaining what "the wish" is and why. Ganta finally realizes the extent of his guilt in creating "original sin" and is finally ready to confront his sins. As the chapter goes on, we finally realize the entire truth about how and why Ganta's class was murdered, and what brought him to Deadman Wonderland. While we already knew what we needed to, we finally have some additional details that pave the way to a bit of a twist regarding the true identity of the Wretched Egg. If you've read the previous chapters, you may have already seen one of the twists, but trust me, you probably don't know everything. So check the link up above, and give the chapter a read.
Having just finished my read-through of the latest chapter, all I can say is, "WOW!" If you haven't been following this serious, then you have definitely been missing out. The last several chapters have had a lot of revelations regarding Ganta and Shiro, as well as the true origins of the "Wretched Egg." The conflict has finally come to a head, and Ganta is faced with the full knowledge of the past, as well as the sins that have been committed. How will Ganta proceed? Will he be able to follow through on his original intent to seek vengeance no matter what? Can he even find another path? With Deadman Wonderland crashing down around him, can anyone get out alive? Well, the answers are not all in this chapter, unfortunately. However, sit back, relax, and follow Ganta on his quest to break free from the past, and save Shiro.
If you haven't been keeping up with the latest chapters, then I suggest you go back and read through them. I would actually start at the beginning, since the animated series left out a lot of details that the manga had. But anyhow, this chapter continues the final arc of the manga series, and what an interesting one it is. So, this is where the **SPOILERS** start. Ganta and the rest of his fellow Deadmen are all trying to reactivate the "Mother Goose" system in order to put the Wretched Egg to sleep and save Shiro. This has been one tense arc, because it seems apparent that Shiro's duality is making things difficult for Ganta. Now that he knows the truth, he has had to overcome some strong mixed feelings on what he should do. On one hand, he truly loves Shiro, and wants to do everything in his power to save her; however, Ganta also loaths the Wretched Egg for killing all of his former friends and causing him all this grief in the first place. Ganta has finally seen into the past through the Director's memories, and has seen that the Wretched Egg was born from the inhuman torture that Shiro was put through. This really helps you understand that this embodiment of "original sin" definitely applies to Shiro/Wretched Egg. They took an innocent young girl and turned her into a monster, and afterwards you can hardly blame the Wretched Egg for having these twisted views on the world. Her notion of "playing" with Ganta is to try to kill him, and in some ways she seems to love Ganta almost as much as Shiro does, but her twisted and malevolent nature means that her only way to express it is through violence. She very much embodies a character that you hate to love, but her story is so tragic and inhumane, I can hardly blame her for becoming what she did **END SPOILERS**
I am looking forward to the next chapter, and I'll do everything I can to keep everyone in the loop. The action is still excellent, the story is extremely compelling and thought provoking, and if you haven't read up on this manga series I highly recommend it. Be warned, however, that the series contains a great deal of violence, blood, and language. Still, as long as those things don't put you off too much there's a lot to enjoy here.

Champloo, and Erueka Seven, comes Deadman Wonderland. Deadman Wonderland is a 12-episode (plus
1 OVA) anime that follows the transition of a young kid, named Ganta, from a nice
quiet school boy into a hardened man.
You start out in a nice quiet school, where Ganta is just starting his
day with his friends. This pleasantness
lasts for all of approximately 3.74 seconds; until a person in Red floats down outside
the building and literally tears the room (as well as everyone in it, save Ganta)
into pieces. This is where the show
really starts making you realize the title isn't kidding around. Ganta is framed for the entire thing, and is
sentenced to death. Ganta is sent to
Japan's first privately owned correctional facility, called "Deadman
Wonderland." Ganta must learn to
survive here amidst the insanity and cruelty that surrounds him. And soon Ganta realizes that he has the
ability to use his own blood as a weapon.
This ability is referred to as a "Branch of Sin," and Ganta
soon realizes that his sentence to this place was no coincidence, as he soon
meets others with similar abilities, referred to as "Deadmen." Ganta must fight to survive, and quickly the
definition of "sanity" becomes more and more blurry. Ganta soon realizes that in order to survive
and uncover the conspiracy, as well as the "Red Man," he will have to
forget the life he lost and become a true Deadman.

For starters,
this show is awesome. Let me say that
again in case you're speed reading and didn't quite let that sink in.... THIS.
SHOW. IS. AWESOME. Between the
characters, the dialogue, the themes, as well as the soundtrack, this show
clearly is a masterpiece. The animation
is very well done, and when characters use their different Branches of Sin, it
truly feels like these things are extensions of the characters themselves
(which makes sense, since it's formed from the person's blood). The story is full of all sorts of compelling
twists and turns, meaning that even if there isn't a big fight going on, there
is still plenty of excitement to be had.
However, the weak of stomach need not apply, since this is a very bloody
show. No seriously, the first episode
has Ganta's classroom turned into "Christmas for Hannibal Lector." This show is bloody, violent, and sometimes
you wonder how these characters can kiss their mothers with those mouths (but then
you realize their mothers might have left them on bad terms). Just as awesome as the show itself is the
soundtrack backing it up, with an original song just for this show's opening
theme: "One Reason" by Fade.

The overall
theme of this series is "the moral insanity of the human race." All of the Deadmen come from fractured pasts,
generally forced to suffer for the sins of others. Between abuse, abandonment, betrayal, and loss; all of these characters could be
considered dead not only because they were all sentenced to death, but because
they've often lost what they defined their lives by. The term "Branch of Sin," can also
be due to the fact that the Deadmen are all referred to as "birds"
who rested upon the sinful branches of humanity. But that's enough of the literary nuances;
suffice it to say that there are a lot of deeper themes within this show that
aren't fully discussed, but are left for viewer interpretation. This is done for a reason, as you'll see
characters view situations through different eyes; some seeing the past as a
reason to condemn all of humanity as the bunch of wretches they see them to be,
while others believe that we can always make a choice whether or not to follow those
who wronged us into madness.
2 Things: 1) Everyone in Deadman Wonderland is scarred. 2) Ganta is still very much a child.
Ganta himself is
a compelling character, at least once we get closer to the end. In the beginning, he is childish and weak; he
is unable to cope with the circumstances he finds himself in. This is understandable, since we don't often
condemn high school students to death. This
show follows Ganta in his transition from being a naive kid to being able to
stand up for himself as a man. This can
feel a touch frustrating at times, as Ganta will want to drown in self-pity,
but this is only to help you understand that he is still young and weak. Ganta will get various forms of help along
the way from other Deadmen, as well as Shiro, a young girl who seems about as
clueless and Ganta, only she isn't as weak.
Shiro will help Ganta out, along with "Crow," and to a lesser
extent, "Hummingbird." These
characters are also products of bad circumstances, but they both have some
depth to them if you care to look.
You don't want to incur the wrath of the "Crow claws."
Overall, Deadman Wonderland is an amazing
show. Between the deep narrative themes,
the wide range of awesome characters, as well as the character development that
takes place throughout the show, this is a sure winner.... Er, that is as long
as you don't mind bloody mayhem with a heavy topping of foul language, partial
nudity, as well as general insanity.
However, these points all tie into the overall theme of the show; so
while they can be viewed as an attempt to appeal to certain demographics, they
really do feel right in the overall context of the show. This is one of the greatest series I've seen
in a long time, and while it won't exactly cater to everyone's sensibilities,
it definitely has a lot to offer those who are able to handle the intensity. The only thing I can truly
say is a shame is that the show only has the one season thus far. This isn't only a "I needed to say
something bad so I'll just say, 'It ended'" type of thing; the show leaves
a lot of loose ends, this is mainly because the manga is still ongoing, and the
show just didn't have the answers to give you.
Hopefully this won't be turned into another tragedy of a potentially
brilliant long-term series being cut short due to simply being forgotten. This show is a must have for any action
junkie, and especially for those who like an engaging and compelling story
behind it all with deeper narrative themes.

The Good:
-Brilliant animation, just realize that
the guys that made Samurai Champloo
made this... enough said.
-Wide range of interesting characters
that drive the compelling story forward.
-Deeper narrative themes for those who
like a little bit of thinking, but understanding these isn't required to understand the basis of
what is going on, so it's optional.
-Music really helps the atmosphere in
this series.
The Bad:
-Ganta can, at times, be a difficult protagonist to get behind.
-Story has some solid closure, but there
are still some unanswered questions and unresolved conflicts.
-Not a personal complaint, but the bloody
scenes, as well as the language, will turn away quite a few of those with
delicate sensibilities.
A Deadman Wonderland AMV, this just chronicles many of the major events from the show, and shows Ganta's decent into the depraved world of the Deadman Wonderland; where "Deadmen" are forced to fight it out, and there are serious consequences for losing. I wanted to post this AMV because I ordered the series, and intend to post a review later this week. This is to give you a little taste if you're unfamiliar with the series, so you have a little idea what's in store for you. This was a fairly well done AMV, with a consistent theme that is backed by the title, music, and scenes selected from the series. I feel like there could have been different scenes used, but this was obviously intended to focus on the protagonist: Ganta. This is a good AMV, and I hope you all enjoy it as well.
