Boruto: Naruto the Movie

By: Robert Murphy

The Village Hidden in the Leaf has gone through tremendous changes since the 4th Great Shinobi War, an era of peace has been ushered in the likes of which has never been seen and Naruto stands at the top of it all trying to be the Hokage he always dreamed of being. Well, he certainly has succeeded in this endeavor as the village has never been more prosperous, even technologically advanced with cell phones, computers and portable video game systems. But, this story isn't about him rather this story is about the next generation of ninjas to come forth in this new era.

Boruto is the son of Naruto and Hinata and unlike his father Boruto is a uniquely gifted ninja right from the get go, he is practically the new Sasuke of this generation despite Sarada Uchiha the exceptional ninja some of us got to see in the ten chapter Naruto Gaiden manga. He also has some deep issues with his famous father who never seems to be around for him or the rest of his family, Naruto suffering from serious workaholic syndrome and even using multiple shadow clones around the clock to keep up with everything. Nonetheless Naruto doesn't come off as a golden example of a father especially to Boruto who wants nothing more to surpass him by becoming even more skilled than he already is.

Boruto's complete opposite narrative in terms of the character Naruto use to be was an interesting take for the movie to go with as he suffers from generally being spoiled by his talents and the generation of peace the ninja world finds themselves in. Boruto always looks for the easy way out of a situation and when anything becomes to hard for him he quickly quits and moves on because failure is not and option for him. This leads him to rely on a member of the Scientific Ninja Corps who has developed a ninja scroll launching tool that allows even genin ninja to use powerful ninjutsu with the flick of the wrist. It's an amazing piece of machinery to see in action but it's further proves just how spoiled of a character Boruto is and Naruto even points out that his son is just too "clean" meaning he doesn't try hard to obtain what he is after. But, despite my distaste for Boruto as a character he does shine through here and there when you realize he is just a kid who wants to be validated by his father and that eventually comes at the half way mark for the movie, only to be ripped away moments later by the main and easily forgettable enemy.

The second half of the movie morphs into something entirely different from the first half of the story once an unknown pair of enemies comes to take Kurama away from Naruto. These two appear just as Kaguya does and they apparently were enemies against her, stealing the seeds from the great tree in order to unlock hidden power. The two are basically rip offs of Kaguya though and bring nothing new to the story or the narrative for that matter. The whole situation really serves as nothing more than another moment to show off how powerful Naruto and Sasuke have become. The battle that ensues is an exceptional one with even the Five Kage stepping in to show of their own abilities but still it felt like a step away from everything that has happened up until this point and that Boruto and his father's issues take a back seat just like they always have.

Boruto's role in this finally portion of the movie is nothing more than the onlooker and the attempt to include him in this portion of the battle felt quite ridiculous. He is able to do damage on this final enemy, who let's remember is on the level of Kaguya, by using his rasengan which is quite different from his dad's or anyone else's as it's distorts space and then reappears. Just like the ninja scroll tool however it is neat but otherwise underwhelming. It serves as a weak reason for how Boruto now feels the confidence to never give up and even rely on his teammates more in the future. Furthermore, the final father-son attack scene doesn't appear to be enough to clear up some of the clear issues both Naruto and Boruto have with one another. It all feels rather rushed and unresolved by the end.

Unlike Naruto Gaiden, the Boruto movie does little to show off the new generation of ninja that will one day advance far beyond Naruto and his friends have. Boruto himself was an all around upsetting character to deal with is as he just comes off as a spoiled kid whose made at his dad for no reason. Naruto himself doesn't come out of this squeaky clean especially when he uses clones for important points in his families life, even emailing them congratulations, but whatever the case it just doesn't work out. The story feels rushed and the enemies are forgettable making the future of the Boruto's generation seem a bit disappointing.

Good:

- The final fight scene is fantastic

- Animation is top notch

Bad:

- Boruto is a spoiled and frankly annoying lead character

- Enemies are insanely forgettable

- Movie feels like two separate tales and neither end satisfyingly

Naruto Gaiden: The Seventh Hokage 10 - What Appears in Those Eyes

By: Robert Murphy

Grab some tissues everyone because this final chapter of Naruto Gaiden was a tearjerker. To start, I apologize that this chapter update is late do to the fact that I was on vacation. This chapter however was a delight to return to as Sarada proves once and for all who her true family is no matter what her doubts were or what anyone else has to say. Her bonds with Sakura and Sasuke are true and Sarada and her family get to enjoy a peaceful time before Sasuke's next departure to defend the village against any new evils. Not only that but everyone else receives a delightful conclusion to their individual stories and we see the sparks for the upcoming Boruto movie come to light by the end of this chapter too. Overall, this may have been a short entry into the Naruto universe but it was a wonderful read and I'm happy it was made.

Naruto Gaiden: The Seventh Hokage 9 - I'll Protect You

By: Robert Murphy

A significant twist is coming our way in this week's chapter as Naruto, Sasuke and the group make their way to Lady Kaguya's dimension to find where Shin and the new Akatsuki have taken Sakura. Naruto and Sarada also have appeared to work things out in terms of where she comes from and who her true parents are and it is about to show in a big way this chapter. We begin to see that Sasuke has certainly changed drastically since the ending of the original Naruto especially in terms of relationships and those he cares about. This will be a big factor for Sarada in the upcoming battle as she reveals not only her new Sharingan but some other familiar abilities that we've seen used before.

Naruto Gaiden: The Seventh Hokage 8 - The Real Thing

It would appear that the long awaited question has finale been answered and Sarada now knows that her mother really is Karin, one of Sasuke's old team members and not Sakura. The web of mysteries surrounding Sarada and her upbringing are still missing some details though so hopefully once this is all over Sasuke and Sakura can explain it better, for Sarada's sake. Obviously, this is an insanely emotional chapter as Naruto was waiting right outside the room once Sarada found out the truth. Hopefully he can use some of his classic Naruto attitude to help her out and turn the situation around until he can smack around Sasuke for a little while but Sasuke will prove to pull a surprising amount of emotion out of this chapter as well, in his own way. The action looks as though it is about to kick back into action by the end of this week so I am certainly amped up to see what's coming up next.

Naruto Gaiden: The Seventh Hokage 6 - An Unevolved Species Evolutionless?

By: Robert Murphy

Even with the combined strengths of Sasuke and Naruto it would appear that this enemy will be no push over as he displays the different ocular powers of his combined Sharingan eyes. Naruto may have missed a few steps being forced behind the desk of the Hokage for so long but Sasuke is there to pick up what he has missed. More questions than answers though about our foe are starting to come about as well, Shin may be more than just a name to these people and why exactly they want to revive the Akatsuki or how they expect to is beyond me at this point. One thing is finally answered however for Sarada as her parents reunite after such a long time before her in this chapter but before any happier moments can be shared things turn ugly.

Naruto Gaiden: The Seventh Hokage 5 - The Future

By: Robert Murphy

We all knew things would be pretty strained between the father and daughter once they finally ended up meeting. Not only has Sasuke been gone since Sarada was very young but he also barely recognized her when she stands before him with partly awakened Sharingan. Needless to say things remain stressful with the beginning of this chapter but the reason as to why Sasuke has been gone all this time starts to be revealed. I for one didn't think he was just endlessly adventuring and leaving his family all alone for no reason, Sasuke is bad with emotions but not that bad. Sasuke has little time to play father though as our new enemy makes their move against our small group however, who they are and what their grand plans are remain to be seen. One thing is for certain though, a feared group looks to be trying to rise once again. The Akatsuki!

Naruto Gaiden: The Seventh Hokage 4 - A Chance Meeting Part 2

By: Robert Murphy

It would appear that Naruto has not lost a single step since the conclusion of the 4th Great Shinobi War and even though he spends most of his time sitting behind a desk, he can still take on the best of them with ease. It would appear that the unknown Uchiha that are now causing trouble are after one thing and that is Sarada. They won't be getting their hands on her though with the Seventh Hokage around even though Shin, our young boy assailant, has some impressive skills of his own. His Sharingan even have unlocked to the level of Mangekyo and he even displace the ability to distort time like Obito could. The question continue to pile up more and more this week. Where did these eyes come from, why are they so similar to the Sharingan powers we've seen before and what do they want with Sarada? Well, that remains to be seen but as Sarada, Chocho and the Seventh move closer to Sasuke's location there is certainly more waiting to be revealed.

Naruto Gaiden: The Seventh Hokage 3 - A Chance Meeting

By: Robert Murphy

It would appear that our new enemies are wasting no time with whatever it is they're attempting to do, as we move into this new chapter we see our shadowy players start to move forward with their plans. The Sharingan is alive and well and not only is there the pair with the young boy who attacked Sasuke but two more have revealed themselves. Where are they coming from or more likely, where did these unknown enemies get them? Naruto takes his leave from the village to try and sort things out with Sasuke but it would seem he is not alone as Sarada has her own plans and follows along to find out where her father is and have him answer her questions. What comes next remains uncertain but with these powerful players in the mix I am certainly getting excited.

Naruto Gaiden: The Seventh Hokage 2 - The boy with the Sharingan...!!

By: Robert Murphy

Hey everybody, sorry for the delay but this week's chapter just slipped by me and as some of you know this series isn't weekly so the scheduling for it is a little up in the air but never mind my excuses let's dig in. It would seem that dear ole' Sasuke may have some explaining to do when his daughter discovers a portrait of him and Sakura was actually a forgery made my Sakura to make it look like they were standing by one another. His daughter Sarada also discovers a woman, Karin, who has the same distinct look and glasses as she does in the photo. Could Karin be her real mother? Well, that mystery still continues forward but Sasuke also gets an unpleasant surprise this chapter and is attack by an unknown ninja with a power that no other person should have anymore besides him. Shadows are lurking in the background and something may be underway and Naruto is about to join in on the action as well because with another Sharingan around you cannot be too careful.

Before I leave you all till the next chapter I want to say I'm quite interested in the direction that this manga is going. Judging by the hype and most of the images, I expected this to be a show about Naruto's son Bolt but that doesn't appear to be the case. I'm definitely intrigued and I feel like this short manga will go interesting places. So follow the link above and I'll see you all next time.

Naruto Gaiden: The Seventh Hokage 1 - Uchiha Sarada

By: Robert Murphy

You all knew it was coming and you also knew that I wasn't going to let it slip by without doing a manga update for it. Yes, the first chapter of the next and brief Naruto series has started to get underway and for those of you who don't know, the series centers around the next generation of ninja, Naruto and everyone's children. These kids are just about Naruto's age when the anime/manga first started way back when and they're all honing their skills and learning from their parents the skills that they'll need to become ninja.

However, not everyone has the benefit of a parent around as this chapter points out. Sarada Uchiha is beginning to feel the pain of not having her father around, Sasuke is currently rummaging around somewhere, looking for God knows what but it was never like him to settle down and become domesticated. This though doesn't seem fair for his daughter who could benefit from learning the Uchiha heritage and some of the impressive skills her father has in his arsenal. Sakura could show her a thing or two as well but she seems to have settled into motherhood in an odd fashion. Oh well. What lies in store for this new series? Well check out this first chapter and see for yourself and I can't wait to share with you all the next chapter to come.
