Bleach 624: The Fang

Zach Goodier

Aizen awakens, to find that the Quincy and Soul Reapers have begun to work together to open the portal. Surprised, Aizen asks why Kyoraku didn't take advantage and try to kill him. Meanwhile, at the palace, Ichigo awakens, and finds himself surrounded by his friends, who have regrouped after being handily pushed out of the palace by the Quincy elite. As they prepare for the next round of the battle, Yoruichi calls out, and a garganta opens, and beyond the threshold stands a familiar face, seemingly ready to join the battle.

I, like many, expected Grimmjow to return at some point, so this really isn't the shocker that it sets out to be. However, this does start to roll in some of the extra assets, although the Fullbring haven't made an appearance. I am unsure how Grimmjow will help turn the tables, but at least we'll have a familiar face rejoining the crew, even if he was an enemy. Here's hoping we get to see some new moves from him in the coming chapters.

Bleach 623: Against the Judgement

Zach Goodier

Aizen prepares to bring down the palace; however, at the last moment, his restraints stop him. It is at this point that Kyoraku and Kurotsuchi explain the nature of Aizen's restraints, explaining that they are the one of the Soul Society's proudest achievements, since Aizen's power cannot by normal means be contained. However, as the captains boast of their achievement, trouble arrives in the form of 3 Sternritters, who appear to mean business. Can the Soul Reapers afford to keep Aizen restrained, or will they have to find another means to deal with this new threat?

This chapter is very significant, since *SPOILERS* several Sternritters are now joining with the Soul Reapers to get revenge on Juha Bach for abandoning them. I am unsure if Juha Bach is ready for this, or if he even cares, but this is a big twist, since it means many former enemies are banding together to come after him. I don't think they will be able to take him on, as they seem keen on doing, but they can still make a big difference at the right moment if they join in the fight with the Sternlichter. I'm hoping in the next couple of weeks we get a glimpse at what happened to Ichigo after his fall from the palace, because he'll need to get back in this fight soon by the looks of things.

Bleach 622: The Agony

Zach Goodier

Aizen has returned, and with all his fearsome power seemingly greater than ever. He effortlessly deals with the little creatures, and in the process damages the barrier around the Seiretei. The others quickly question Kyoraku, who knows that this decision is not one that would be appreciated, but he argues that pride alone won't save the world, and that Aizen is another form of "evil" that can be used to fight the evil they face now. Aizen casually sits and spectates this exchange, patiently waiting out the arguments before returning to his work. While Kyoraku can't completely free Aizen, he bargains a deal to get him on their side, at least for the time being. However, as Aizen's power disrupts the portal in the lab, he says that they don't need the portal now that the barriers around the palace have been breached, and that he will use his power to help them.

I really missed Aizen in the story, and he's already making up for lost time. His calm, cold exterior and his confidence always seems to disrupt the other soul reapers, and it makes things much more interesting. I always saw similarities between Kyoraku in Aizen, in terms of their cunning and relatively quiet demeanor. Having them interact more in this story arc has given both characters a chance to show their stuff, and it really has me on the edge of my seat.

Bleach 621: The Dark Curtain

Zach Goodier

Juha Bach is absorbing the Soul King. However, even Juha Bach can't contain the power he's taking. His body overflows, and strange creatures begin to pour out of him, and spill down to the Seretei. The invasion party, still unready to depart, starts to fight these creatures to prevent them overrunning the lab, and the rest of the Seretei. However, swords don't quite cut it against these creatures. Just in time to win the "good timing" award, Aizen shows up, explaining that the solution is to use their spirit energy to crush the creatures. Is Aizen really planning to help the Soul Reapers, or is there another motive we've yet to learn?

Aizen is looking to be a help at this point, but I definitely think there's more he's not sharing at this point. Even Kyoraku seemed to view Aizen as a desperate measure when he released him from prison, so I'm not the only one to anticipate some ulterior motives behind Aizen's assistance, ones that go beyond stopping the end of the world.

Bleach 620: Where Do You Stand

Zach Goodier

Ichigo stands before Uryuu, trying to talk him out of fighting for the Quincy; however, it's to no avail, as Uryuu shoots out the floor under Ichigo and sends him tumbling down from the palace, before he falls, Sternlichter X shoots him, to make sure he's dead, so they don't have anything to worry about. The rest of the Sternlichter appear, expecting an army to have come to stop them. When they find that it's just Ichigo's friends, they're sorely disappointed. The Soul King's right arm tries to fend off Juha Bach, but it's to no avail, and Juha Bach decides that he will absorb all the powers of the Soul King, starting with the right arm. The rumbling begins in Soul Society once again, as Urahara and the rest of the reinforcements are still getting ready to depart. Will they be able to make any difference this late in the battle, or is their chance already long gone?

A couple of things are bothering me about this chapter. For one, the whole "let's play 20 questions with Uryuu" part felt like a waste of time, since it's clear he's already sided with the Quincy. Whether he intends to change sides again or not, he wouldn't discuss such a course of action right in front of everyone, and it felt like all that was restating what everyone, including the characters, already knows. Also, we already know that Urahara had opened the gateway to the palace, and yet during the course of this battle, they still haven't departed, despite the urgency to get there. I wonder if it's for the plot convenience, because Aizen might have to be there to help in the battle, as well as a couple other potential allies, but it feels like the story is starting to tread water again, and at what should be such a fast-paced part of the story arc. Hopefully that's just for the next chapter or two before things pick up again, but until then, back to waiting for next week.

Bleach 618: The Dark Arm

Zach Goodier

Aizen steps forward, free of his bonds. Kyoraku stands his ground, offering to take Aizen up to the surface. Aizen remarks that Kyoraku is carrying the key to the gates of the prison within his chest, meaning if Aizen killed Kyoraku he would be trapped in the prison forever. Both men find their situation somewhat amusing, and Aizen finds the offer to go the surface to be a thinly veiled request for aid. However, Kyoraku states that they are at a point where both men find their goals to be parallel, so he intends to set Aizen free in order to add another piece to the board in the struggle against Juha Bach.

Meanwhile, back at the palace, Ichigo attacks in earnest, starting what could very well be the final major battle of the series. Does he have what it takes, or will he fall before the Quincy King, just as so many others have?

Bleach 617: Return of the God

Zach Goodier

Quick Note: Sorry for the late post this week, I've been under the weather, so please excuse my tardiness in posting this week's Bleach manga.

The situation appears to have turned, at least for the moment, as Ukitake's sacrifice appears to buy everyone a brief reprieve from the destruction brought on by the plans set forth by Juha Bach. However, as everyone attempts to break through to the palace, they find that without Ukitake, they don't have enough power to open the doorway. However, Kurotsuchi arrives with an answer, a device from his lab to boost everyone's power enough to break through.

Meanwhile, back in the underground prison, Head-Captain Kyoraku decides to talk with Sosuke Aizen, who has been imprisoned for the last several years. He is bound by numerous seals, and Kyoraku only has permission to unlock 3 of them to talk with Sosuke. However, after unlocking only one, Aizen breaks free from the rest of his bonds, and steps out of his dark prison to face Kyoraku. Does Aizen plan to turn on the Soul Society once again, or perhaps he might be able to help find a way to avert the imminent disaster?

Bleach 616: Mimihagi-sama

Zach Goodier

Ukitake reveals an incredible secret, and claims he has the ability to replace the Soul King. However, even if he is able to do this, what will stop Juha Bach from simply killing him, as well? As Urahara is, for once, caught totally by surprise with this new development and Rukia and the other soul reapers present listen to Ukitake explain what he is about to do, Kyoraku goes deep into the underground prison, to confront Sousuke Aizen. Does this mean that Kyoraku means to set Aizen free in an act of desperation, or is there some other purpose behind his actions?

This chapter finally answers a lot of the persistent questions as to the nature of Ukitake's illness, and why he turned out this way. However, it also raises more questions, specifically how he was able to encounter a piece of the Soul King's body. Did the Soul King cast away parts of his own body in anticipation of this day? Only time will tell if all of these actions were intended to save the world, or if there is some other intent. However, the most interesting part is the final page, where Kyoraku seeks out Aizen. This could mean that the Soul Society's traitor could actually be making a return to the series soon.

Bleach 535: Everything but the Rain Op. 7 "Defenders"

***SPOILERS*** This week's chapter continues with the crisis that Masaki is going through.  With her forced hollowfication following her fight with Aizen's construct, she is in severe peril.  Ryuuken and Isshin are looking to save her however they can, and they may have found a way with the untimely arrival of Kisuke Urahara, who we all know has more than a little understanding of hollowfication.  However, the only way to save Masaki's soul from collapsing in on itself is to "tie" a soul that is "opposite" of her Quincy soul.  Ryuuken figures it out first, but Kisuke explains that she needs to be "tied" to a Shinigami, which means only Isshin can save her.  Will he go through with it? Well anyone who is familiar with the story will already know the answer, but if you are curious about the series, now is as good a place as any to start reading.  Stay tuned for news on manga releases right here at Scullynerdreviews.com!

Bleach Chapter 534: "Everything but the Rain Op. 7: Hole of Reproach"

*Spoilers* This week's Bleach chapter is mainly more downtime, but it continues to advance us towards what we already know happens in the story.  The only real twist has been that Masaki Kurosaki seems to have been infected with hollow powers after aiding Isshin in battle against Aizen's experiment.  This could lay the groundwork for how Ichigo was able to manifest fullbring and hollow powers to the extent that he could. While we already know Ichigo manifested his own hollow powers, they may in fact have been fueled by the powers that may have been passed down through these events.  The entire purpose of this chapter was Isshin telling Ichigo the story of "his roots," so this may in fact be fully outlining the exact nature of Ichigo's past and how his powers have come into being.  While I am definitely interested in where this story arc goes, especially now that Kisuke Urahara has made an appearance, I wonder how this will guide Ichigo when we return to the present story.  As usual, I guess we'll all have to wait for the next chapter in order to have just a bit more of the mystery surrounding this story unveiled.

Bleach 533: Everything But the Rain OP.6 "The Gravitation"

*Usual **SPOILERS** ahead*This week, we see the conclusion to the battle against the mysterious hollow in the world of the living.  Despite the apparent failure of this creature to Kaname, Aizen sees this is a fortunate accident.  Obviously, Aizen has already anticipated roughly how events are potentially going to unfold, and decides to take a step back and let things play out.  With this part of the past unveiled, we now understand a lot more about how Aizen knew of Ichigo's existence for so long, and why Aizen was particularly interested in Ichigo's development and power.  Also, with this part of the past revealed, we can expect that Ichigo will have to move ahead, realizing that at least some of what Aizen explained to him was true.  There still are a few gaps to fill, so that likely means that this story arc will likely continue for another couple weeks, at least.  This arc has been enlightening, and provided some essential backstory and character development for both Isshin and Masaki, two very important characters to the current story.  I am rather interested to see how events unfold, but I am also eager to return to the present so that we can see what this revelation does to Ichigo.  I expect that Ichigo will eventually develop into a true transcendent being, like Aizen was hoping to become.  All the pieces have been falling into place: Soul Reaper, Hollow, Fullbring, and Quincy.  Ichigo has elements of every natural form of spiritual power woven into his being, and now we just have to see how they will all fall into place, or if they even will at all.  The ever looming thought in my mind is how the Soul King is tied into things; Aizen's final words when fighting Ichigo are still ringing in my ears when it comes to the story, and I hope that overlooking this ominously foreboding thought won't lead to disaster for Ichigo and his friends.

Until next week, all we can do is speculate, and hopefully you are all just as eager for the next chapter as I am.  Come back next week where hopefully we can start to answer some questions relating to this compelling story.

Bleach Chapter 532 is out!

It's that time of the week: Bleach manga chapter is out for all to enjoy.  Some **SPOILERS** ahead. Last week, we saw captain of squad 10, Isshin Shiba, fighting a mysterious hollow clad in black armor.  Just when Isshin was planning to get serious, he suffers a wound from a surprise attack from behind.  As it turns out, Sosuke Aizen and his party have come to ensure that their "sample" isn't interfered with by someone who can use a bankai.  Now, Isshin is wounded and having to face this monstrosity all by himself, unable to use his bankai due to the seriousness of his wounds and the apparent toll it takes on his body to use his bankai.  Aizen is preparing to leave, claiming that if his "sample" couldn't survive a shikai, then it's a failure anyways; however, a young Masaki Kurosaki appears on the scene, sensing the fight and wanting to end it before someone gets hurt.  Kaname moves to eliminate her; however, Aizen stops him, saying that he wants to see what happens.  To see exactly what does happen, check out the link and read for yourself.

Bleach: Soul Resurreccion

Buy Bleach: Soul Resurreccion at **Amazon**

Article by: Zach Goodier

Bleach: Soul Resurreccion is a ps3 exclusive that features the battle against Aizen and the Arrancar.  The story mode takes you through a run of many of that major battles, and has you take on the role of the characters that fight those battles.  Aside from the story mode, there is also a mission mode that lets you choose any character you have unlocked to take on missions to earn soul points to purchase upgrades.  These upgrade points are specific to that character, so you need to play the characters in order to purchase upgrades for that specific character.  The characters are voiced by the actors from the series, and the characters have their own unique abilities.

To start with, the presentation is fairly simple: fight through the map as one of the characters from the show, and then once you get to the end of the level, you fight some sort of final battle, usually against another of the characters.  The story doesn't allow you to choose characters, but if you have upgraded the featured characters then those upgrades apply in story mode.  The level design features environments inspired by the show, but they aren't overly detailed or original.  Once you play through the first couple levels, you realize that there isn't a lot of variety.  The levels themselves change, but the overall feel is still the same.  Having partially destructible environments helps a lot, though.  Characters all have their same voices, but the acting isn't up to par with the show, and you will find the in-game lines they use somewhat tiresome after a while.  When a character grunts or has a line they say when they get hit, then you'll hear it EVERY. SINGLE. TIME.  This can wear quickly in the boss battles, and keep you from hearing some of the actual story dialogue that goes on in the background between the characters.  Also, some of the relatively central characters are missing.  This was done for a reason, if you think about it.  Due to the diversity of powers, some (like Renji, and Chad) don't really have powers that fit into the combat dynamic of the game, so they aren't playable, but they can be found in the upgrade system, and the give the characters some interesting abilities.  The game even features Kokuto, the character from the 4th Bleach movie, Hell Verse.

You'll be doing this over, and over, but you can literally fly through most of it.

The gameplay itself is pretty good.  You may think this will be something like a DBZ game, and in many ways it is.  Characters feature individual moves from the show, and they all have a powered up version with a finishing move that is also taken from the show.  However, the combo system isn't incredibly deep.  You just hit, blast, or special.  This makes the game feel somewhat tedious at times, but if you're here because you like the show, which I would assume so, then you will enjoy it regardless.  Sure, the combo system isn't as deep as an A-list fighting game like Devil May Cry or Ninja Gaiden, but this isn't an A-list game, unfortunately.  Once you get that through your head, your expectations should drop a bit.  THIS ISN'T A BAD THING, you just have to realize that like many anime adaptations, this didn't get the big budget and award-winning studio you might be used to.

Surf's up. Play as your favorite heroes/villains and use their powers.

The mode you'll be playing the most is Mission mode.  This is where you have free pick of the characters, allowing you to take your favorite one out and play through the missions.  This features many of the same maps as the old ones, but you won't mind the repetition.  This game isn't about the polish or the depth of story; you're supposed to just enjoy getting to control the characters.  The challenges bring you back, forcing you to eventually take on wave after wave of other characters, sometimes 3 or 4 at a time.  This gets to a real challenge on the higher difficulty levels, which you almost HAVE to play in order to get that S ranking overall and rake in those soul points.  However, you won't be equipped to do that until you get your character upgraded.

Some challenges are... *puts on glasses*.... BIGGER than others.

Overall, Bleach: Soul Resurreccion is a game that could have been so much more.  The depth of the story, the characters, the emotions, that's all missing.  However, this game assumes you already know all that.  This is made for those of us who wanted to jump into one of our favorite characters, and start being a total badass.  This game might not be as deep or engaging as it could have been, but it's an anime adaptation; they never get the budgets or polish that they deserve.  So if you judge this next to your A-list titles, then it will be a bitter disappointment.  However, if you see it as simply what it is: an attempt to give us Bleach fans a chance to grab our favorite zanpakuto, jump into a swarm of hollows, and face off with some of the toughest villains in the series, then this should be your cup of tea.  I bought the game almost a year ago and I still find myself going back from time to time, just to play as Ichigo and save Orihime; or maybe I want to play as Aizen, and crush everyone.

This game isn't about polish or detail, it's about reliving your favorite battles with your favorite characters.

Good:
-Get to play as most of your favorite characters.
-Gets you ahead in the story if you're watching the English version of the anime, but not in great detail.
-Characters well animated in-game and have all of their signature moves.
-Allows you to enjoy more of those characters that may not have received as much screen time as you might  have appreciated in the show.
-Solid game, considering the tiny budget it was made with.

Bad:
-Not an A-list game, that sums up most if not ALL of the game's issues (graphically unimpressive, lackluster environments, voiceovers decent but not up to par with the show)  .
-Couple of key characters left off the roster, but understandable when you think about it.
-No multiplayer.

The Decision to Protect - The Final Getsuga Tensho (Bleach AMV)

This AMV uses several different (and awesome) tracks, all set around different parts of Bleach.  All of these parts come from the final battle with Sosuke Aizen, and tie in different parts of events leading up to the climactic showdown between Ichigo and Aizen.  The effects and song selection are all excellent, but there are a lot of spoilers (that's why I'm putting the text before the video).  Ok, so **SPOILERS** after here.  This amv takes a lot of "artistic liberty" with its subtitles.  First, Gin doesn't want to kill Aizen to take his power, he actually only plays along with Aizen all those years so he can "get back" something Rangiku lost.  This change really ruins Gin's character, in my opinion.  Also, Ichigo's use of the "Final Getsuga Tensho" doesn't actually result in his death, it results in him losing all of his powers.  This change doesn't ruin the story as much, but I felt it was an unnecessary change that tried to make the ending feel too heavy. **END SPOILERS**

This AMV does a great job with the scene and song selection, and the effects, while sometimes a little excessive, were all very well done.  Sometimes, however, less is more; and while this AMV does a lot of things well, the beauty of AMV's is how they seem to naturally fit songs to the shows, and this AMV stepped beyond its boundaries, to some extent.  The changing of the subtitles, as well as the excessive use of effects held this AMV back from excellence, in my opinion.

Songs (in order):
Mark Petrie - Polar Shift
He Who Brings The Night
Killzone 3 Soundtrack - Theme
Fight Inside - Red
KoRn - Coming Undone v. Blue Stahli - ULTRAnumb
The Hit House - Radium
