Topics: Good Reasons NOT to Buy Next Gen...Yet

So you're a gamer and well that LAST gen system is SO last year, what to do? Obviously the answer is to go out and buy the newest and best the two powerhouses have to offer (sorry Nintendo but you are no longer a powerhouse for most gamers.) If that is your logic as a gamer, I feel bad for you son, I have 99 problems but the next gen ain't one. So, me personally, I think that you should hold off, and I will even be so nice as to tell you why. So without further ado, here is my list.

1.        The Price- Yes all consoles are expensive, especially when they first come out but $500 for the Xbox One and $400 for the PS4 and neither of them come with a game for that price? Really? And yes, I can hear my ears ringing as I am typing this all of you are saying "It is worth the price" or "Its new of course it will be that expensive." But why gamers why does it need to be so expensive when they first come out and for that price I want a game I can play with them, but no because we spend the money the companies know they don't need to include games because they know we just end up saying "what is another $60 bucks....and don't forget you need another controller so there is another $50. So just starting out with Xbox One and 2 controllers and a game you are looking at close to $610 and for the same package for the PS4 $510

2.        Launch Games- Games at launch, well, THEY SUCK. They are usually ports from the previous generation or they are brand new games that have a lot of issues. They may look beautiful, but well, let's be honest, Ryse and Knack are not games you will be playing a year from now. Yes, Ryse for the Xbox and Killzone: Shadowfall are graphically stunning and visually will blow your mind. Ryse is just a quick time game that will get old quick and Killzone, sad to say from a killzone fan, but the story falls short. Also launch games are limited you buy the console and get what 4 or 5 games to choose from and two of them happen to be games from EA...I really suggest wait at least a few months

3.        Pay to play-Ok ok, so really you are not paying to play the game after you buy it....but well are you not? Let me explain myself here. You already pay the internet company right what 40 to 100+ to use the internet pending on what type you have and where you live. Now you go out and buy that brand new console and have to pay  5 bucks a month to play multiplayer......wait, what? So I already pay for the internet why do I need to pay to play games online?

4.        Backwards Compatibility- OH WAIT....They are not, so that library of games you have spent money on over the years can't be played on that new system of yours. So what do you do buy them again when it comes out digitally for the new system (if you have gotten rid of that pesky old gen system) or do you keep your old system and PRAY it doesn't break? And most of you are like me have to trade things in to help lower the price, but if you're like me you hold on to a few games (Mass Effect Trilogy, Fallout and Skyrim) so now you can't play those games but well they just look so darn pretty on your bookshelf collecting dust.

Now, I'm not saying that if you buy a new system you are a idiot, it's just smarter to wait a few months let the price drop, new and better games for the improved software and for your old games that you love to come on them and be cheap (eventually they will developers love your money.) Now there is nothing you can do about the monthly membership fee but granted it is not that much I just like to bitch. But now you're asking yourself well he makes a good point (somewhat) but what are some of my options? Well I have a few for you.

1.        Keep the old system. believe me they will make games for the 360/PS3 for a few more years. They are not going to abandon their old systems just like that. They need to phase them out so they can get people like me who are holdouts to slowly find games they want to play on them and buy into the new systems.

2.        Get a gaming PC. yes it can be an expensive step but I promise you most of the games that go to consoles go to PCs as well. Want to know something else...it is a secret so keep it between me and you ITS BACKWARD COMPATIBLE....I'm playing games from the '90s and enjoying it. Also you can keep upgrading your gaming rig so in the long run its better than a console (my opinion not the sites opinion) 

In the News: Could Sony and Microsoft be Pricing Next-Gen titles around $70?

Just doing a little bit of snooping around, and it turns out that there is a possibility that the next-gen titles will go up another $10 over the current one.  This isn't unheard of; seeing as the current generation was $10 over the previous one.  Nothing is confirmed right now, and there are conflicting sources.  Sony said at panels that games should remain at the $60 mark, but will also offer $.99 samples; allowing gamers to get a small preview before committing the full price for the game.  This feature sounds enticing, as it would allow you to potentially avoid wasting the money on a title you start up and feel disappointed by.  News of the potential $70 price tag on next-gen titles came from Michael Patcher, who made the comment at a panel.  At the moment, nothing is confirmed.  Sony never set a specific price range for their titles, so journalists are reaching out for further comment.  We here at ScullyNerdReviews.com will try to keep you all in the loop as events unfold.

In the News: Assassin's Creed 4!?!?!?

Well guys and gals Ubisoft has just announced that Assassins Creed 4 : Black Flag is a go. The game will be released on PS3, Xbox 360, PC, and the Wii U with no inclination of its release on the PS4, but with that being released this year we can only assume that this game will be released on that system as well. The game will be based upon a pirate theme and if any of you are like me when enjoying the naval battles of Assassins Creed 3 asking “why didn't they make this a bigger part of the game?” well I believe they had this game already in mind. What is interesting though is that because the games usually take place during famous eras and because its pirate based that would mean sometime between 1500's to the 1700's, but Assassins Creed 3 took place in the late 1700's during the American Revolution. So this may be a first for the franchise instead of moving forward in time they may be going backward or even possibly overlapping. The overlapping theory comes from the Examiner who believes that the games main character will be Edward Kenway and yes that name should sound somewhat familiar being because he is the grandfather to Connor Kenway the main character to AC3.  Another thing that will make most players very happy is that they are not creating the many spin-offs to AC3 and jumping straight to the next part of the series.  But that is all we know so far hope to hear more very soon according to Ubisoft they will be releasing more info about the game Monday but we can only hope.

In the News: Sony Announces Playstation 4

Hey SNR fans, we have some news for all you Sony lovers. PlayStation 4 is coming in 2013. Now it's hard to tell if this is going to be a good thing or a bad thing so let's take a deeper look.

What we have heard is that they are giving us the option to hit a share button on the controller and share a video of your game on social networking sites. They also said that it is going to be like a “super charged computer” which in the gaming world is very exciting. They are also promising less lag time between player and content with this they hope that gaming load times and console start up speed are quicker and possibly even a thing of the past. The thing that impressed me the most was the fact that you can download games in the background while you play OR even with a fraction of the download done play the game itself.

But with the good also comes the bad. Again we are getting a console that is not backwards compatible now if you are like me this is a big issue and will keep me from buying a PS4 right away. Another little annoyance is being able to have a friend spectate you while you play even if they are not at your house, nor own the game itself.  Also we have heard that Sony just patented the technology to keep used games from being able to be played on their systems. Now they say they won't use it but why patent it if you don’t intend on using it?

Along with the new system, we're getting a new controller also the dualshock controller is getting a face lift. Gone are the old Start and Select buttons, they are replaced with Share and Options buttons. It also has a touch pad in the center of the device and has a headphone jack. This may allow us to play and chat with friends that are playing different games.

So with the new system being released this year we of course need new games right? RIGHT and when they announced the PS4 they also announced a few games that will be released near its release date. Bungie will be putting its new world Destiny to the PS4. Killzone will have a new game, along with Infamous.

We at Scully Nerd Reviews have mixed feelings about the new system and think that it may be a bit too soon for a new console war. With this we have high expectations for the system but hope not to be disappointed by it. We are still waiting to hear on a price tag so our wallets know how badly they will be hurt, and an official release date which has not been set yet. So here is to hoping that 2013 will be a good year for gaming and the newest system to hit the shelves.
