Naruto 700: Naruto Uzumaki!!

By: Robert Murphy
Link to the manga here

Well, it's finally here everyone, after fifteen years of chapters Naruto has come to it's final pages and it's enough to bring anyone down. I happened to have started the show when I was about thirteen years old and it was probably the first thing I had defined as an anime in my mind, even though DBZ and others came before it. I'm really going to miss these chapters but I have no doubt that we haven't seen the last of the Naruto world. This chapter is a fitting farewell for the series and it jumps quite a few years into the future. We see the Leaf Village doing well once more and we also get to see the new faces of the people we've known for years. But also some new faces are here too, that's right our favorite ninja have been busy making the next generation and the pairings/faces are something to be seen. Some you could see coming from miles away but it's still fun to see them finally brought to life, but I won't spoil any of that for you all. I hope you all enjoy these last pages as much as I did, goodbye Naruto Uzumaki!!

Naruto 693: Once Again...

By: Robert Murphy
Link to the manga here

Well after almost a two week break the latest chapter of Naruto has finally come our way. To recap, last chapter we saw the defeat of Kaguya and the end of this long and ancient conflict, everyone was returning to the other side and the Tailed Beast were free once more. However, it seems that things can never stay peaceful for long and Sasuke has made his move now for his future plans to be hokage and create a revolutionary change in the ninja world. This meant the capture and soon the death of all the Tailed Beast and Naruto was not about to let that happen. A final conflict is about to begin but who will be left standing over the other this time around, the stage is now set for a legendary battle and one we've all been waiting for.

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution

By: Robert Murphy

It would appear that the world of Naruto is finally about to come to a close after countless chapters and episodes and even the last Ninja Storm game brought the 4th Great Shinobi War to our gaming systems. It's sad to see one of my long time favorite animes about to come to a close but I will still have these games to relive all the action in the palm of my hands and that's exactly what I intend to do with the release of Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution. Wow, these titles are definitely not getting any shorter.

Revolution takes a bit of a step back from where we left off with the last game by bringing some of the unsung stories of Naruto to our attentions. Ninja Escapades takes on the role of telling the games only real main story element but sadly it only offers three story arcs to choose from, one of which is just a watchable cut scene. The two playable stories tells the story about the formation of the Akatsuki and the other is the tale of Shisui Uchiha, both of which are intriguing storylines but are represented here in an incredibly dull fashion. The story writing and cut scenes are extraordinarily dull and were honestly the most mind numbing experience I've had before, sure cutscenes have always been a tad dull but this one takes the cake. The fights themselves are uneventful as well and will take you about five minutes to complete so it makes the whole mode just feel like a waste of time.

Next we are introduced to a new mode to try and spice up the 1v1 style fighting we are accustomed to from the Naruto games and introduces us to the Ninja World Tournament. The mode is marketed to try and allow players to try and determine who the strongest ninja to ever live is and allows you to choose from the games massive character list and fight other ninjas in a 4v4 battle mode. The winner in this mode is determined by earning points balls that drop from your NPC opponents after you land blow after blow against them in combat. While on the hole this seems like an interesting idea, it quickly sours as your enemies are incredibly easy to beat even as you get to the harder modes latter on. This mode also suffers from annoying side missions where in between each fight you can return to a free walking area and find ninja to help you fight in the tournament which at one point involved me answering Naruto trivia, yes that really happens. It is an overall waste of time and energy on your part to even play.

After you defeat the first wave in the Ninja World Tournament, you unlock the next tier but also a new mode which tells the story of a new character, Mecha Naruto. This is a mode that involves free roaming and a small semblance of a story to tell players about a new world with this robotic look alike of our favorite ninja hero. This mode though also suffers from the lack of good storytelling and writing that Ninja Escapades suffers from and it also will make you walk and maneuver through tedious cut scenes and conversations with familiar Naruto faces.

In the end, not much changes in Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolutions in terms of the way you play through the games fights and battles. It is nice to see the updated list to the character roster but really there is no area in the game where it is fun to use them. The game is bogged down with the bad game elements that developers came up with in previous games and adds a whole bunch of new ones without adding anything appealing to it. I really don't know what happened here with this game and hopefully the next one will not suffer the way this one did.

Good:

- The game sees an updated roster that takes you right up to the manga releases

- Features the same solid fighting mechanics it has in previous games

Bad:

- The new story modes of Ninja Escapades are short and unappealing

- Poor writing and mind numbingly dull cut scenes make any story unbearable

- Ninja World Tournament tries to add 4v4 fighting fun but the whole experience is a flop

TMNT

By: Robert Murphy

Growing up I was in love with those four pizza eating heroes that lived deep down in the sewers of New York City and I'm sure a lot of you did as well, kids today even get to enjoy new versions of the classic characters and have fallen crazy for these teenage mutant ninja turtles. Now we have a new addition to tell the story of Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael along with their rat master Splinter and how they all came to be. Once more we see the Foot Clan terrorizing the world and it is up to the four to put an end to it and save New York from this group and their leader, Shredder. Will they be up to the task? And will the movie prove to spark up some childhood memories? Well let's find out.

The first time I watched a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie was back in the 1990's, where the turtles were played by men in big clunky and ridiculous looking suits but you know none of that mattered because it added to the charm of the already ridiculous idea of four human like turtles fighting crime like ninjas. Now things have changed though, technology has come a long way and we can see the turtles in a new way which should be better right? Well I don't think this was the case, the turtles are still lean, mean, fighting machines but for whatever reason the movie felt it was important to put a whole bunch of useless material attached to the turtles to amplify their personas. For instance Donatello is covered with random technological gizmos and gadgets to show how he is the smart one of the group and you just sit there and ask yourself, "why?". There was really no need for it and the turtles personas from the shows don't come up much as it is in the movie. The teenage mutant turtles I saw in this movie were bland characters, they had no substantial appeal to them at all and they're what the movie was all about so what is there left to enjoy?

The turtles most powerful enemy also returns for the reboot for TMNT and proves to be the greatest challenge they have ever faced before. The Shredder has always been an incredible enemy to the turtles in the show and he never fails to be one of my favorite bad guys from my childhood just by how skilled he is and how much of a challenge it is to fight him every time. His skills alone were what made him so deadly before but not in this adaptation unfortunately, this time the Shredder has a new fancy robotic suit that somehow comes out and it is simply stupid in my eyes. When we first meet Shredder in the movie, we see him training his skills by taking down armed Foot Clan members with his hands chained behind him, not taking a single scratch from the encounter. This was awesome but then why would you put the already killer warrior in a samurai suit covered in knives then? It was pointless and takes away from the Shredder character. His Foot Clan are not any better, we do see Karai (Minae Noji) make an appearance as second in command but she is barely even used or referenced as a character and appears weak and worthless rather than a strong character like in the show. The Foot themselves are just as weak, they appear more as thugs than elite ninjas under Shredder's command, they even wear weird masks that look oddly similar to the masks worn by the Immortals from 300 which makes even less sense.

Not much of what makes TMNT what it was to all of us is present here in the latest movie, when something does come up that would make you laugh or smile in nostalgia is ruined before it even happens. The one point where the turtles famous catch phrase, "cowabunga" comes out but it is ruined by a ten minute set up like a bad joke. Any and all references are ruined by poor set up and placement in the movie, the pizza loving, catch phrases, all of it was just a shallow pond that you're forced to swim in. I was mildly surprised by April O'Neil (Megan Fox) who was the one part of the movie that was actually accurate in comparison to the old show, she is driven, a great reporter and was the resident cutie for the turtles to pal around with. It may be a little hard to see with her dialogue being ruined by her partner and camera man Vernon Fenwick (Will Arnett) who attempts to constantly hit on her and fail time and time again.

In the end, I'm so immensely disappointed by the new TMNT movie, so very little remains the same of the original story from the comic book and shows that it might as well have been an entirely different movie. What little remains of the original story was ruined with painstakingly long set up and poor writing. April O'Neil was the somewhat decent character hidden away in the movie and other than an epic fight between Shredder and Master Splinter, there was not much to enjoy about the new turtles. Despite all this, the knuckle headed turtles proved to earn a pretty penny on this latest movie so maybe a new director will come in if a sequel is in the works.

Good:

- April O'Neil wasn't too bad of a character and was the closest I got to an original character from the show

- Master Splinter and Shredder's fight scene

Bad:

- The new Shredder is ridiculous and it's clear Michael Bay is taking his Transformers styling and applying it here

- The turtles are bland characters who adopt a new look that is just awful

- The original story is completely lost on this movie

Ninja: Legend of the Scorpion Clan

By Zach Goodier

This board game involves a relatively simple basis: 2-4 players can play on 2 teams, one is trying to infiltrate a Japanese castle as a Ninja and Traitor, while the other team plays the guards, and seeks to defend the castle from infiltration and kill the intruders.  The guards choose the locations for 6 objectives within the castle itself, as well as hidden sentries and traps.  Meanwhile, the intruders pick 2 of the objectives (1 per agent) to try to complete, then escape the castle to win.  Obviously, the guards win if the intruders are caught and killed, or fail to complete their missions.  However, there's a big twist: the intruders don't put their pieces on the board unless the guards find them.  The intruders must use paper copies of the map to track their movements, and calculate where objectives are within the castle as they search for the one they need to complete.

The game board. Note the numbers in the upper right, that is the turn count, and the bottom right has the alert level.

The game lasts for a total of 20 turns, with the guards organizing patrols and sentries around the castle, along with stationing guards in barracks to use later in the game if needed.  The ninja starts outside the castle, and must sneak into the castle through various tools such as a secret passage (which the intruders can place before the game starts), and ropes that can help them get over castle walls.  Intruders can move up to 3 spaces per turn (sneaking, walking, and running).  The faster you move, the more noise you make, and the easier it is for the guards to notice you.  So intruders must balance stealth with the race against time, making them feel the  pressure.

This is the full setup, in this case for only 2 players.

Some of the objectives that the intruders might have to complete within the castle.

On the other end, the guards don't have to complete any objective other than prevent the intruders from completing their goals.  So guards must try to sniff out where the ninja and traitor are using cards to have their patrols and sentries listen and search out where they believe the intruders are.

(Left to right) Traitor, Sword Guard, Ninja, Spear Guard, Drunken Guard (only used if Traitor uses his Potent Sake ability to incapacitate a guard without arousing suspicion).  Each Guard player controls one type of guard, sword of spear.

Intruders have cards, as well.  Both sides can perform attacks to wound/kill opponents if in conflict, and guards can search, while intruders can deploy rope, use passages, or perform other acts to avoid detection and neutralize guards.  It is impossible for the intruders to eliminate all the guards, so don't think you can "run and gun" your way through this game as the intruders, you must think of kill cards as a last resort to avoid being killed or found.

Some of the cards, the two left cards are exclusive to the Traitor, while the Secret Passage if for both intruders.  All players have access to the Kenjutsu card to kill guards or wound intruders.

The brilliance of this game is that it is relatively quick to set up, simple to play, and has amazing stealth mechanics for a board game.  It provides a challenge to both sides, as it has the guards and intruders playing cat and mouse with the time playing against the intruders, and the open expanse within the castle grounds, as well as the mobility of the intruders, working against the guards.  The only real issue is that, like other games, you need to get the right people together.  It can be frustrating for players, as well, if the teams aren't properly balanced.  Fun is had when both sides know what's going on, and are equally skilled in the game.  Otherwise, some of the danger is taken away and the experience.  In all, a great game for anybody who enjoys a little strategy and stealth.

The Good:

-Exciting game that challenges both sides, while making them feel diverse yet fair.

-Stealth mechanics make the game extremely fun.

-Involves use of strategy, skill, and a lot of luck, but no silly dice rolling to determine your fate, you make all the calls.

The Bad:

-Teams must remain balanced, if possible.  Otherwise, the experience as a whole suffers when one team is dominating the entire game (this isn't against the game itself, this essentially applies to all games, anyways).

-Honor system is in play.  Since the guards can't see where the intruders are, they rely on the honesty of the other team to tell them when the guards find something, which is easy to abuse at the expense of the other players.

Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations

“Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations” is a role-playing fighting game based on the Naruto manga series by Masashi Kishimoto and is a sequel to “Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm” and “Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 2”. While carrying several elements previously seen in the prequels, such as playing the story mode, tournament mode, online multiplayer mode and a survival mode. The story mode features two parts to the Naruto universe, the younger years when Naruto is just starting out as a ninja and the later years where Naruto is a well on his way to being a full-fledged ninja, you play through stories based in both time lines for gamers and fans to enjoy. As you progress through the story you unlock hidden collectables ninja info cards that can be customized for online play, each card comes with a special skill that can come in handy to gain the upper hand playing against people online. Through the entire story and game experience you get a feel for the manga and the anime and it expressed perfectly through the main story line. The incredible graphics come shining through in the unique battles, incredible fight moves and massive battles from iconic characters in the Naruto universe. “Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Generations” while simple and easy to get into, people who aren’t die-hard fans probably won’t be picking this off the shelf but the game is fun and easy to get into.

With a very lengthy storyline, an online fighting experience and other enjoyable fighting modes to experience with everyone’s favorite characters from the show. The graphics come out absolutely gorgeous, capturing the Naruto universe in both the manga and anime which will have fans clamoring for more and making a lasting impression and keeping players hooked with tons of characters to unlock and play as, stages and online modes to enjoy for months.

Good:
-Incredible graphics
-Captures what Naruto is all about
-Epic battles and a strong story

Bad:
-Won’t hit home with people who aren’t fans of the show
-Another Naruto fighting game, with another around the corner
