The Witcher 3 - Pre-E3 Trailer

Zach Goodier

Here's the early trailer for Witcher 3. I enjoyed 2, but thought it felt a little on the short side, and it never opened up as much as I had hoped.  Hopefully, this next installment is everything I'm hoping for, and then some.  Getting Charles Dance to voice the king is also interesting, bringing some quality talent into the fold on this latest installment.

Happy Memorial Day + Game of Thrones Trailer

Zach Goodier

It's Memorial Day for us, which has kept us busy most of the day with celebrations and memorials.  So since we've basically taken the day off to celebrate and remember, here's a little something to whet your appetite for Game of Thrones this coming Sunday.  There was no episode yesterday, which left me getting a preview of what life will be like once the season ends (it wasn't pretty).  So here's a trailer for next week's episode, enjoy.

From all of us here at Scully Nerd Reviews, we hope you had, or are still having, a great Memorial Day.  Remember to take a moment to remember the ones who have fallen to protect us.  If you're viewing this page and you are not an American, then remember those who have fallen to protect your home, wherever you live.

X-Men Days of Future Past Second Trailer

By: Robert Murphy

Hey everybody, I had the great pleasure to see the second X-Men: Days of Future Past trailer come up on my news feed this morning and I have got to say I'm getting more and more excited for this movie. The movie is delving into a very interesting moment in the X-Men universe and is looking like it will be handled beautifully. Not only are we seeing the new younger faces of Magneto and Charles Xavier but their older selves as well in the future where mutants are on the verge of extinction as they were hunted and killed/captured by humanity and it left the world war torn and destroyed. Everything about the movie looks impressive and I cannot wait for the release, I hope you all enjoy the trailer and I'll see you all for more reviews later in the week.

World Premiere of First Guardians of the Galaxy Trailer

Zach Goodier

Hey guys, Zach here, I'm going to try to get a full article up later tonight, but for now, I have a trailer for you guys: Guardians of the Galaxy. Unfortunately, I have very little experience with the franchise, so I probably can't give it the review that comics fans will appreciate.  However, as a general nerd/fan of all things that are awesome, this has a my seal of approval so far.  The action, humor, and quality are all far above par for what I deem to be worthy of interest, so I will definitely be looking to give this a watch when it comes out.  So relax, and enjoy this trailer for the upcoming movie, Guardians of the Galaxy.

Evolve - Happy Hunting Trailer

Zach Goodier

You know how hunting games are usually a little bland, boring? Well, kiss those days goodbye with this trailer for the upcoming game Evolve. It is a competitive/cooperative multiplayer game that pits several hunters against one player controlled monster, and the game involves the monster trying to evolve, and become stronger, and avoiding the hunters until he is strong enough to overwhelm them.  As the hunters, your job is simply to kill the monster, but the longer you take, the tougher your job will likely be.  So far, we've only seen one type of monster, but it could be interesting to see the other types they come out with, and how those types may affect both the type of game, and the general strategy of both the monster and hunters.  Stealth types would be welcome, as it would incorporate some interesting Alien-style tension as the hunters must keep sharp or fall prey to the beast.

One concern I have is the focus on hunters having to work together as a single unit.  While I would definitely prefer a squad to have my back, rather than risk going out into the dark, savage jungle alone, I feel like there should be a little more focus on risk vs rewards in the way of being able to cover more ground, find the monster early, and eliminate him.  While that doesn't seem outside the realm of possibility, it seems that each of the classes of hunter are rather single-minded, and can't operate at all outside their particular specialization.  Medics likely won't have any major offensive or defensive power, so they can provide a set of eyes, but can't fend for themselves.  While I understand that medics aren't supposed to be commandos, I hope they have enough defensive capability to be able to at least put up a fight, rather than needing their squad to babysit them.  Other classes seem less limited, but still require the entire squad to play their role.

Despite my concerns over how the final game might turn out, I would enjoy to see more of what it has to offer, and I look forward to seeing the final product, and maybe even snagging a copy to play with my friends.

The Elder Scrolls Online - The Arrival Cinematic Trailer

Zach Goodier

Hey guys, have a new Elder Scrolls Online trailer for you.  It's been up for the last couple of days, but I'm sharing it in case anyone out there has missed it.  This introduces what looks to be the main conflict in the game aside from the apparent PvP driven faction conflicts.  Apparently, some form of deadra come into Tamriel and introduce an undead plague in their brief incursion into our world.  While this is a new concept to the Elder Scrolls games, there are a pair of novels that already delved into a similar type of concept.

These books, titled "The Elder Scrolls: The Infernal City" and "Elder Scrolls: Lord of Souls" are a 2-part story involving a city that crosses over into Tamriel from Oblivion, and creates an army of undead servants that begin wreaking havoc, and eventually attack the Imperial City.  This concept seems to have either served as inspiration for this games conflict, or it is all entirely coincidental, which seems an odd coincidence.  The books are set between the Oblivion Crisis and the return of the dragons, so this game couldn't be cover this event since the setting is centuries before either of the games take place.

I'm interested to hear more of the villains, and just how they fit into the story, quests, and the game as a whole.  It could be interesting to band together with rivals to fight these deadra, and their undead army.  It could also be interesting to compete with rivals to be the first to resolve this crisis and destroy them.  The potential dynamic between reluctant allies or bitter rivals against a common foe could provide a great deal of entertainment and excitement as the game unfolds, but we still have a bit of a wait until the game releases, so we'll just have to see.

Bound by Flame Trailer

Hey guys, Zach here.  Today, I have a trailer for the upcoming game Bound by Flame.  I haven't had a chance to look around too much for news at this point, but I'll share what I know so far.

First off, this game is being made by a small studio.  Why is this relevant? Well, it means that even though it comes off as a fantasy epic the likes of Skyrim, it is going to be closed off, linear with individual missions that you play as.  The focus for this limited studio is going to be the story, which will have branching paths that lead to various endings, but no specifics on the number of divergent paths yet.

The story focuses on your character trying to summon and harness a fire demon, only to have it invade his body.  You have 3 branching skill trees, which helps this feel more like an RPG, and you can focus on warrior/tank, ranger/bowman, or mage/demon.  As you develop your demon powers (which you don't have to do, apparently), you will visibly look more like a demonic version of yourself, as you will be empowering your inner demon by spending points in his development.

While these features aren't entirely new to gaming, after games like Fable using morality as a basis for changing appearances,  it would be interesting to see more of how this all comes out.  My interest is more in the story, which has an undead army being used to conquer the world, and our hero's summoning of the demon presumably comes out of desperation.  It would be interesting to see where the story goes, and it's nice that the studio has already said that the main focus of the game is going to rest with story.  I will be paying close attention to this as more new comes out, and I think it would be nice to see a small, independent studio make a name for themselves and garner some well-deserved fans out of this project.

Alien: Isolation Trailer

Zach Goodier

Alright, so I have a new trailer to review.  And while I normally don't go too deep into trailers, after the whole Colonial Marines issue, I wanted to discuss some of my hopes for this game, and my opinions on how this could turn out.

First off, I love the new direction.  While I still would love to play a good shooter as a colonial marine, I feel like it would be tricky to capture the feel of the second movie.  For instance, ammo was very tight in the movie, and most games give you more than enough to run in guns blazing.  This really ruins the sense of being trapped with hardly enough to defend yourself.  Resources need to be scarce, so that a marine would have to be forced to conserve ammo and decide between fight and flight, whether to engage enemies that threaten their survival, or fall back/hide to avoid confrontation when possible.  But these are issues for another game, sense this one doesn't seem to have any weapons at all, taking after the first movie and not the second.  You will not be fighting, and there is only the one alien, but you can't just flee, either, since the Xeno will hear you and immediately chase you down.

This is where the intriguing part of the game begins: you are prey, only.  The other games focused on letting you fight back, having a changing dynamic between hunter and hunted, but this game doesn't give you the option.

The issue then becomes keeping the player from getting bored, or giving them incentive to even think of traveling through the shadows, if they have no way of defending themselves from the monster in the dark.  Well, you need to complete objectives to survive, whether it be repairing the ship, gathering resources to survive, or whatever you'll have to do.  And to keep the levels from feeling boring, the alien has its own AI, which uses sight, smell, and sound to always approximate where the player is, and hunt the player.  This is what makes the game both exciting, and scary as all hell in the darkest depths of space.  This thing is always hunting the player, and every little creak, sneeze, fart, or wrong step could bring this alien down on you like Thor's barb-tailed hammer.  Your only option is to play it smart, weigh your options, wait for your chance to move forward, and know that it will never be safe.

You will be playing the daughter of Ellen Ripley, who was briefly mentioned in the second movie as already deceased.  This game takes place 15 years after the events of the first movie, so this could be a neat transition between the first and second films.

I'm hoping this game turns out as advertised.  While I don't look forward to wetting myself under a table staring into the two sets of teeth before I shake loose this mortal coil, this could be the beginning of a new wave of successful Alien(s) games.  This franchise isn't made for shooters, but for survival.  Even in the second film, survival was the main theme, and even though the characters had weapons, they weren't going to be enough to protect themselves from the Xenomorph horde.  If this game is successful, I believe it could be a sign to producers to focus more on capturing this feeling, and making the game less about jump scares followed by a shooting gallery, and making it more like being a mouse with a slingshot looking up at a branch covered in owls.  This is something that Alien games have been missing, and I hope this return to horror will get the ball rolling for future games.

Grand Theft Auto 5 Official Trailer

By: Robert Murphy

I will now proceed to nerd out on all of you, more than I usually do that is because the new trailer for Grand Theft Auto 5 makes me want to pull an Eric Cartman and freeze myself till the day the game comes out because I just can’t wait. The video above shows off the three new characters that we will have the opportunity to play as and also gives a little back chatter about their lives and why they’ve come together. These three characters are Michael, Trevor, and Franklin and the video shows how in the game you can freely shift between each character and play as whomever you like and that applies to during story missions too. During a mission you can be playing as one character and if a situation gets too complicated you can switch to another player (if you planned your heist well) and have them assist your other characters. This brings up another aspect to GTA 5 and that is that players have the ability to plan out the missions however you choose to, many of the missions involve robberies and crimes and so you get to plan out these heists, whether it be clean and calculated or rough and guns blazing, it’s up to you. After the heists are over and you take your cut, you can do whatever you like with the cash and there is so much to do now in with all your cash, many features like buying properties and buying homes from previous games have been brought to GTA 5 along with the ability to invest in stocks and buy tattoos, cars and so much more. I’ve been literally drooling over all I’ve seen in this video for GTA 5 and I can’t wait till I get my hands on it, I hope you all enjoy the video and get the same feeling I did from it.

In the News: Riddick Official Trailer

By: Robert Murphy

As some of you may know, it has been nine long years since the “Chronicles of Riddick” has come to us and our master of the shadows, Riddick, is coming back to the big screen with a new film that is simply dubbed “Riddick.” This time around you’d think that Riddick would be living it up with his giant army and enjoying the good life of not being a wanted man anymore but that wouldn’t be Riddick, no Riddick is once again on his own as it is meant to be and as of right now we don’t know what happened to his army after the last film. What we do know is the price on Riddick’s head seems to have doubled and now more than ever he is being hunted by what he hates most, Mercs, this trailer shows off even more of Riddick’s amazing skills and the unfortunate team of Mercs who decide they think they can bring him down. The trailer gets me incredibly excited for what is in store and I hope it does for you so sit back and enjoy, Murphy out.

The Elder Scrolls Online - The Alliances Cinematic Trailer

While there's a lot of looking ahead to the future of consoles and some of the new and returning franchises that we know and love, I just wanted to take a minute and share the cinematic trailer for The Elder Scrolls Online.  While the beta had some mixed opinions, Bethesda is working hard to make sure the game is everything we hope for by the time it releases.  While I am somewhat cautious with my optimism, I would love to see the Elder Scrolls setting take off as an MMO, as long is it can preserve the sense of independence and scale that the single-player installments have done.  My biggest concern is that the world won't quite feel as big and wondrous when it's packed with players.  That being said, I still relish the idea of being able to dungeon dive with some friends, and having that co-operative gameplay to enjoy.  Here's hoping that this turns out to be everything we hope.

Stay Nerdy my Friends,
Zach

Thor 2: The Dark World Trailer

Written by Zach Goodier

Gear up for another Marvel movie, Thor is back with the sequel, "The Dark World."  Make sure you watch this all the way through, because one of the big moments of this movie is the reintroduction to Loki.  Despite his being a prisoner of Asgard, it appears that he may be let out of the cage to help Thor in this movie.  Does this mean that Loki will escape and renew his pursuit of conquest, or will he perhaps become a reluctant anti-hero to perhaps spice up our potential Avengers sequel with a return?  We will have to wait and see, but also important is that Jane will be coming back, which you will either like or hate, but she appears to be visiting Asgard, which apparently highlights the differences between them in terms of where they belong.  This could put some strain on the potential relationship developing between them, but there is also the enemy.

I haven't done a lot of research, and I haven't read any of the source material out there about them, but it appears that Earth is in danger again- go figure- and the forces of Asgard are being called to defend Earth from this new threat.  I guess we'll just assume that Iron Man, Hulk, and Shield are all on vacation and didn't get the memo, or maybe they will appear... but wait, this isn't the Avengers sequel... so most likely not.

We'll just have to wait and see, more details are likely to be revealed as we draw closer to the November 8th release, so be patient.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation International Trailer 2013

Exciting new trailer out for the upcoming film.  It does a great job of setting the stage for the release.  With the President replaced by Cobra, the Joes seemingly betrayed by the world, and nobody but a tough general to trust, how are the Joes going to turn things around?  Well if the Rock isn't your favorite guy, there's Bruce Willis in the lineup to further tempt you.  With the release still a ways off there's a lot of room for this movie to go either way, so mark your calendars and keep an eye out for more updates in the coming months.

Enjoy,

DMC E3 2012 Trailer

This is one of the earlier trailers for the upcoming Devil May Cry reboot.  This gets a little more in depth into Dante's story and demonstrates more of what the atmosphere is going to be like during gameplay.  The main differences from prior titles can be summed  up as such: demons have control of society and manipulate people without their knowledge, Dante is younger and a bit more of a punk, and the missions appear to take place in the surreal realm of Limbo that exists in parallel to our world and hides the demons true forms.  Some fans take issue with the apparent changes to the backstory and characters from previous installments, including Dante himself.  Only time will tell how much merit these concerns have when the game releases on January 15th, 2013.  I myself look forward to a fresh take on the action-packed franchise to renew my love of the Devil May Cry.

Enjoy,

Scully
